In honor of 9/11 there was a free rock show at a church in Pataskala. Three bands played that night, and it was a pretty amazing show. Two of the three were from Columbus, House of Heroes, and Twenty One Pilots.
Twenty One Pilots is definitely a live band. The studio albums are great, don’t get me wrong, but in order to fully appreciate this band you have to see them play a show. There are only two guys in the band, and they rely heavily on technology to fulfill a large sound, but down let that retract from them, they are a band that gives everything they have to the show. During a track called “Anathema” they split the crowd as the drummer Josh Dun brought an extra drum kit down into the audience. Frontman Tyler Joseph then took his place at the drum kit on stage, and by the time the song reaches the full build the drum beat drops and then both Josh and Tyler start playing the drums, and that’s only the start.
House of Heroes headlined the night, and they put on an great show, I have seen them the past three or four times they have played in the area. They are always full of energy and there for their fans, and this time was no different. House of Heroes has been playing for around 10 years, and they played a good mix of their newer and older songs. Their favorite trick is to stop playing right at the end of a build-up and then wait a few seconds for the crowd to think the song is over. Once the crowd starts to clap they go back into the song full force and the crowd tends to go crazy.
Both of these bands put on an amazing show and I recommend checking them out next time they are in town.
Twenty One Pilots was the first guest on my TV show Live at 33, you can check that out here.
