What students are wearing nowadays seems contradictory to the school’s message of excellence and integrity. It’s hard to take someone seriously when they can’t even present themselves in an appropriate manner.
The list below only consists of a few articles of clothing and footwear, but I bet everyone reading this has taken notice of them.
1. Yoga Pants/Leggings
Females (and a select few males) wear these all the time around campus. When I was a freshman, you didn’t see this all too much outside of actual yoga classes or on the occasional cardio bunny, but now, you see every female and her mother wearing these around campus. Originally intended to allow flexibility inside a gym atmosphere, these leave absolutely nothing to the imagination — you may as well just spray paint your legs with the color of your choice and then head to class. Don’t be offended when guys are checking out your curves in these bad boys, as it’s kind of difficult not to.
2. UGG Boots
The UGG website says that these were originally created by male surfers to keep their toes warm and dry. Either there is some kind of surf trend I’ve failed to notice here on campus, or a bunch of teenage girls thought it would look good to tuck their yoga pants into these. Over on the Australian Vogue fashion forums, a contributor posted “UGG boots are for wearing at home when it’s cold, not out into public,” which I couldn’t agree more with.
3. Large-Framed/Fake Glasses
Not long ago, I saw a student wearing a huge pair of black framed “Real 3-D” glasses. Before, this trend was restricted for nerds and bookworms, but it has been taken over by a new kind of people. College is all about expressing yourself, but ladies and gentlemen, don’t be someone who you’re not.
4. Gym Attire
There are two different styles you’ll see at the gym on women — either early ’90s “Full House” style clothing, or yoga pants, sometimes with a visible thong and a low-cut shirt. Some of these ladies spend more time getting ready for the gym than they do for class. As for you, gentlemen, there’s nothing wrong with a cutoff or tank top, but when the shirt looks more like a small rag rather than a former football T-shirt, it’s not at all flattering.
5. Flat-billed hats
You’ll find these on some bros, usually sideways. Remember in high school when there was the “no hat” policy? That rule was made to show respect to the teachers. Our professors deserve respect within the classroom. If you expect the same in return, keep it under the desk.
People are starting to dress like they either just woke up or simply don’t give a crap, even though it probably takes just as much time to get that look.
It has come to a point where something needs to be said. I am an old-fashioned guy who respects women, but I find it becoming more and more difficult to keep this attitude when it doesn’t even seem like you respect yourself.

I’m not familiar with this writer, but unless he was intended to come off as sexist, he should find alternative ways to convey his point. I get the sloppy dressers on campus. I don’t get what you being old-fashioned has to do with your entitlement to doll out respect based on what a person wears to class. Men are mentioned briefly in the article, but the last graph defaults to women are being responsible for their clothing and therefore don’t respect themselves. It’s getting uncomfortable close to victim blaming, especially with the comment “Don’t be offended when guys are checking out your curves in these bad boys, as it’s kind of difficult not to.”
I’m not thrilled with Robert’s approach to this article. I’m sorry, but last I checked there are no colleges that dress professionally on a daily basis. I don’t apologize for wearing leggings. I choose to wear them for their comfort, NOT to get guys attention. You cannot generalize all college women as wanting to “flaunt” their figures. The last thing on my mind at 730am is not about looking clean for class. Frankly I don’t care if I look sloppy because I want to wear sweats. Bottom line: don’t generalize. Because I don’t even wear Uggs!
This is definitely geared towards girls, but who really cares, its college you are supposed to dress comfortable. Sure giving it an effort every once in a while looks good, but as long as you know how to dress professionally when you need to, I’m fine with dressing however you want.
Somehow I find it very difficult to believe you when you say you respect women.
“Don’t be offended when guys are checking out your curves in these bad boys, as it’s kind of difficult not to.”
This is sexist and an example of rape culture. Not only is it offensive to women, but also to men. Men are not incapable animals who can’t control themselves. They are more than capable of controlling where they look, what they say, and what they do. And women should not take the blame when they fail to control their behavior and act appropriately.
You should respect a woman regardless of how she dresses. And wearing leggings, ugg boots, glasses etc. is hardly a sign of having no self-respect.
A very sexist article indeed.
If dressing in yoga pants or leggings is automatically asking for guys’ attention, then you’re probably one of those guys who think women ask to be raped.
Both views are false, both are sexist, and both are disgusting. Dressing comfortably on the way to class is nothing to sneer at. If these same people walked into a job interview dressed in jeggings or something, then I’d call it a professionalism problem, but class is entirely different.
You acknowledge college is a place to express yourself, yet still judge those who do so. “Old fashioned” is not an excuse to be sexist… despite the fact that “old fashioned” ways are frequently geared toward male-dominated societal views that are sexist against women.
I don’t even get the point of this article. College is a time to express yourself….but I’m going to criticize the style of people’s leisurely dressing. It’s not like this a trend among your professors.
And yes, I must say, this is pretty sexist.
