Declaring a major is a difficult task. Sticking with that major after you’ve declared it is not only difficult, but even more complicated.

I’m not sure if indecision affects every college freshman, but if it’s a disease, I’ve caught it.

I came to Otterbein thinking that I might want to be a journalist. I had elaborate daydreams about taking over Anthony Bourdain’s job on the Travel Channel or maybe becoming the next Frank Bruni for the New York Times.

I’m taking the basic news writing and reporting class, audio production, and I’m on the Tan & Cardinal staff as Assistant Opinion Editor.

But for some reason, even though I’m doing these things that I always thought I would love, I don’t.
I adore the T&C staff— they make Tuesday night crunch time a little more sane. I like professors— they’re nice and helpful. And I like writing— but I never feel compelled to take on an article for the newspaper, nor do I enjoy prying into peoples’ private lives in order to display the information to the world.

I don’t want to decide during my first semester of college that I hate my major. I don’t think that basic courses are a fair indicator of what a major actually is. But I do want to be passionate about what I’m doing, and I don’t know that I am right now.

I suppose most things you learn from college don’t come from your textbooks, so I’ll just have to wait and see.
