“Remember, remember the 5th of November.G uns, treason, power and plot.”
From when I was a kid this rhyme was known by many of us. The time to remember it was 5th of November, when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the House of Parliament in London. He did not succeed and was executed.
British celebrate the day by—now this may sound cruel—burning a Guy Fawkes scarecrow on a large bonfire on this day since 1605. We have fireworks to represent the unexploded gunpowder.
Thanksgiving may be one of many Americans favorite holidays or days to celebrate, but Guy Fawkes night is definitely mine.
The different cities around the country go to great lengths to have the best firework displays, to have the largest bonfire and best food. This can be a surreal experience every year, depending on the theme of the fireworks.
I saw fireworks in Chicago last weekend; it was amazing. I was told earlier that week that Ohioans find it difficult to buy fireworks over the counter, or it is illegal. I am not entirely sure this law is understandable as fireworks can be dangerous, yet I would not enjoy Guy Fawkes night without them and American’s would not enjoy the 4th of July without them, they always have a way of making a celebration grander.
